Porsche Penske Motorsport reflects on another successful IMSA season

Porsche and its factory outfit Porsche Penske Motorsport have left their mark on the 2025 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

In a dramatic season finale at Road Atlanta, the Stuttgart-based sports car manufacturer and the Mooresville, North Carolina–based team claimed every title in the top-tier GTP class. Since the launch of the LMDh regulations in 2023, the Porsche 963 has been by far the most successful hybrid prototype in the IMSA series. Its record includes 11 wins, 12 titles, and 9,441 championship points. The 2025 campaign particularly highlighted the marque’s endurance racing strengths, with Porsche also securing its second consecutive IMSA Michelin Endurance Cup, covering the races at Daytona, Sebring, Watkins Glen, Indianapolis, and Road Atlanta.

“It hasn’t always been easy for us,” says Thomas Laudenbach, Vice President Porsche Motorsport. “Our team showed incredible spirit and extracted the maximum possible from every situation. I’m immensely proud of that.”

“I am extremely proud of the commitment and effort by our entire Porsche Penske Motorsport team. Winning the 24 Hours of Daytona two times in a row along with the other key races and back-to-back IMSA championships wouldn’t have happened without the hard work and long hours by the men and women on our team. It’s a remarkable moment for our organization and our 5+ decades with Porsche”, comments Roger Penske, Founder and Chairman Penske Corporation.

After four victories in Daytona, Sebring, Long Beach, and Laguna Seca, Porsche Penske Motorsport achieved six further podium finishes. Consistency, reliability, flawless execution from drivers and crew alike, and well-calculated race strategies were the keys to defending all GTP titles once again.

Urs Kuratle, Director Factory Motorsport LMDh: “Winning all titles back-to-back is something very special. It shows the strength of our team and drivers and reinforces just how successful this programme has become.”

“What this group has accomplished over the past 4 years is nothing short of remarkable. Not only did our team and Porsche go back-to-back in all available championships, but we were also able to go back-to-back at the Daytona 24 Hours“, Jonathan Diuguid, Managing Director Porsche Penske Motorsport, says. “In addition to this we were able to add a victory at the 12 hours of Sebring and were victorious in the unofficial ‘36 hours of Florida’. Now we are pushing for the best result in the WEC in Bahrain, where we have opportunities to win both the drivers and manufactures championships as well.”

January 26: Porsche celebrates 20th overall victory at the 24 Hours of Daytona

Porsche kicked off the 2025 season in spectacular fashion: Felipe Nasr (Brazil), Laurens Vanthoor (Belgium), and Nick Tandy (United Kingdom) drove the Porsche 963 to overall victory in the 24 Hours of Daytona. It marked the 20th overall triumph for a Porsche race car in North America’s most prestigious endurance race. The sister car, driven by Mathieu Jaminet (France), Kévin Estre (France), and Matt Campbell (Australia), completed the podium in third place. Porsche took the early lead in the manufacturers’ standings and never relinquished it.

Daytona was strong, Sebring even stronger. At the iconic 12 Hours of Sebring, Porsche Penske Motorsport doubled down with another dominant performance. Nasr, Tandy, and Vanthoor also won this second round of the season, giving Porsche its 19th overall Sebring victory. Team-mates Campbell, Jaminet, and Estre secured second place, completing a Porsche 1-2 finish at the legendary airfield circuit. After only two rounds, Porsche, its factory team, and both driver trios led all championship standings comfortably.

April 12: pit crew and drivers shine at the Long Beach Grand Prix

For the 50th anniversary of the Long Beach Grand Prix, the factory team pulled a classic “Penske Perfect” move. During a late-race yellow flag, lightning-fast pit stops allowed Porsche to clinch back-to-back 1-2 finishes and its third consecutive victory of the season. After this first sprint race of 2025, Porsche already led the manufacturers’ championship by more than 100 points.

May 11: Porsche celebrates double victory in Laguna Seca thriller

Following wins in Florida and Long Beach, Laguna Seca marked the first standard 2:40-hour IMSA-format race of the season. Porsche Penske Motorsport again demonstrated top form: Campbell/Jaminet prevailed over team-mates Nasr/Tandy in a thrilling flag-to-flag battle – the first race in three years to run entirely caution-free. Four races, four wins, three runner-up finishes, and one third place made it an unmatched record after the first four races of the year.

May 31: Porsche 963 claims 17th consecutive podium finish since 2023

Due to Detroit’s street-circuit characteristics, the two Porsche 963s weren’t favored on paper. Still, both hybrid prototypes led much of the 100-minute sprint through the Motor City. Campbell and Jaminet finished third, extending Porsche’s streak to 17 consecutive IMSA podiums – a run stretching back to August 2023.

June 22: a crash and less competitiveness bring setback at Watkins Glen

The historic Watkins Glen International circuit has never been the strongest IMSA venue for Porsche. The 2025 edition proved no different: in a chaotic six-hour race with ten safety-car periods, Campbell/Jaminet finished fourth, while the sister car retired after a crash. It was the first DNF for Porsche in the 2025 season. Nonetheless, the team retained the championship lead in all standings.

August 3: tough luck during crash-heavy Road America round

The final sprint race of the season at Road America turned into a demolition derby, with numerous incidents forcing repeated safety-car interventions and thus disrupting strategies. After leading several stints, the No. 6 Porsche finished fifth; the sister car, delayed by a penalty, crossed the line in 11th.

September 21: difficult home race for Penske at Indianapolis

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway, part of the Penske Entertainment Group, gave special meaning to the six-hour endurance round. However, the Porsche 963 couldn’t match the pace of their rivals on home soil. Finishing seventh and 12th, the team focused on damage limitation, successfully defending the top spot in all championship categories.

October 11: Maximum success at “Petit Le Mans” on Road Atlanta

Entering the “Petit Le Mans” finale, Campbell/Jaminet held a comfortable drivers’ championship lead due to eight strong rounds. But in the manufacturers’ title race, Porsche led Acura by only seven points – reduced to two after qualifying. The pressure was immense, yet the team delivered: Campbell and Jaminet finished third, sealing all GTP titles. For the second straight year, Porsche lifted the manufacturers’ championship trophy, Porsche Penske Motorsport took the team championship, and Campbell/Jaminet captured their first GTP drivers’ title. In the IMSA Michelin Endurance Cup, the factory outfit again topped all standings: Nasr/Tandy claimed both the driver and team championships for the No. 7 car, while Porsche secured the manufacturers’ crown.
